Located in northern Kenya, Samburu is known for its unique wildlife species such as the Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk. The Ewaso Nyiro River sustains wildlife in this semi-arid landscape.
Sweetwaters Game Reserve is a 24,000-acre private ranch with magnificent views across the plains to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. This game sanctuary is the closest reserve to Nairobi (2.5 hours drive), home to all the big five game, and has the highest ratio of game-to-area of any park or reserve in Kenya. Its popular waterhole is floodlit by night, providing excellent and secluded, rarely seen game viewing.
A 200-acre Chimpanzee sanctuary has also been set up at Sweetwaters Game Reserve. A visit to this Sanctuary and the 30-minute boat ride (subject to fine weather) on the river among the chimps attracts no extra charge. The project's aim, initiated by Lonrho East Africa, Kenya Wildlife Services and the Jane Goodall Institute, is to set up a colony where chimps can be introduced, rehabilitated and taught to fend for themselves in an area similar to their natural living conditions. Priority is given to orphaned and abused chimps. The Sanctuary currently has 24 chimps, including two babies born in the Sanctuary.
One of Kenya’s largest parks, Tsavo East is known for its vast open landscapes and red-dust elephants. The Galana River and Lugard Falls provide scenic highlights, while wildlife includes lions, giraffes, and large herds of buffalo.
Home to Africa’s second-highest peak (Batian -5199m and Nelion -5188m), Mount Kenya offers spectacular alpine scenery, glaciers, and diverse ecosystems. It is a top destination for trekking and mountaineering.
Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley dominated by the harsh volcanic crater of Mt Longonot to the east and the Eburu Hills to the west. The lake is located at a surprisingly high elevation of 6,000 feet, higher than Nairobi, which is strange given the tremendous drop you must navigate to get down on the Rift's side.
The 'Happy Valley set,' which today sweepingly embraces any white British person with a little bit of money who claimed their place in the sun, was popular in this part of the Rift in the first half of the twentieth century. In fairness, the antics of the few tainted the many. While there is many a juicy scandal, there were plenty of hard-working pioneers who laid the framework for the development of colonial East Africa.
Naivasha was home to an assortment of folk, some of whom have left impressive legacies through Elizabethan manors, sprawling ranch houses and beautiful areas of acacia woodland bordering the lake. Unfortunately, flower farms and vegetable farms have become the most visible characteristic of the area, if not the national economy; however, there are still some lovely ranches and lodges with a lot of character that offer warm hospitality and freedom to explore.
There's also Hell's Gate National Park, where the game isn't as abundant but walking is allowed, making for a pleasant diversion. It is slightly difficult to know where to place Naivasha from a visitor's point of view as it won't be for everyone, but there are certainly some highlights to be noted.
A highland park characterized by forests, waterfalls, and moorlands, the Aberdares offer a unique safari experience. Visitors may spot elephants, buffalo, leopards, and the rare bongo antelope in a cool, misty environment.
Located near Diani Beach, Shimba Hills is a coastal rainforest reserve known for its population of rare sable antelope. It offers scenic landscapes, waterfalls, and a cooler climate compared to the coast.
Kenya's beautiful coastline is world famous, and acts as the perfect complement to the rigors and exhilaration of safari days. The series of palm-fringed beaches that stretch the length of the coast - from Lamu to Zanzibar, are of picture-postcard quality, and the range of accommodation suits all tastes.
The Kenya Coast is one of Kenya's main attractions. It offers a combination of historical sites, and superb beaches and coral reefs, of which Ernest Hemmingway once wrote rare completely unmatched in the world. The Kenya Coast can be divided into four main regions: The town and port of Mombasa; the South Coast stretching from Mombasa to the Tanzania border, the North Coast covering the beaches from Mombasa to Kilifi; and finally Watamu, Malindi and the Lamu archipelago.
Diani Beach is Kenya’s premier coastal destination, renowned for its powdery white sands, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters. Stretching along the south coast, it offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling and diving in coral reefs, kite surfing, dolphin excursions, and dhow cruises. Nearby attractions include Shimba Hills National Reserve and vibrant beach nightlife, making Diani ideal for both leisure and activity-filled holidays.
Malindi is a historic coastal town blending Swahili, Arab, and Italian influences. It is famous for its marine national park, where visitors can snorkel among colorful coral reefs and tropical fish. The town offers a mix of cultural heritage, beach relaxation, and water sports. Nearby attractions include the Vasco da Gama Pillar and the ancient ruins of Gede, making Malindi a rich destination for both history and nature.
Famous for its dramatic cliffs, gorges, and geothermal activity, Hell’s Gate allows visitors to explore on foot or by bicycle. It is one of the few parks where walking safaris are permitted.
A wild and less-visited park, Meru offers diverse landscapes including rivers, swamps, and savannah. It is known for its association with the story of Elsa the lioness from Born Free.
